Meet Our Teachers & Influencers

Ashleigh Lee Ackerman ~ Owner & Artistic Director

Professional Experience:

Ashleigh received her first contract in Japan singing & dancing for JTB at 8 years old, then continued to perform professionally in numerous paid performances throughout QLD and Sydney until taking to the USA at 15yrs to perform in California LA & Las Vegas Nevada with her family and previous dance company. Once she was 18yrs, the sky was the limit and she secured contracts touring Singapore with ESPN & Adrenalin Australia, which then led to becoming backup dancer/singer for Australian Idols Stan Walker, Emily Williams, Zoe Badwi, R&B international icons; Chamillionaire, Obey Trice, Crazy Town, Nelly, Kanye West and Ashley Roberts on The Pussycat Dolls Australian World Tour.

With 26 years of training as a dancer/singer/actor, also professionally working in the industry as an entertainer from such a young age and 15 years experience as a performance teacher/choreographer; Miss Ashleigh created ALDC for students wanting to be versatile in all modern popular styles of performance at affordable prices for families. As the oldest daughter of 4 girls who all grew up in the performance world, dance and performance gave the Ackerman girls values that have provided them with successful careers and helped shape them into who they are today~ in particular the benefits of gross motor and cognitive development for one of Ashleigh’s younger sister’s who is special needs. Ashleigh is a fantastic and positive role model, inspiring her students to be great entertainers and performers….but more importantly, teaching today’s generation that they can feel special and happy by simply being themselves.

Melissa Ackerman ~ Admin & Accounts Manager

Melissa is Ashleigh’s mother and the manager of ALDC running all admin, accounts and enquiries as the main point of contact via the studio phone/email. She has plenty of experience running the family’s pool business for 25+ years and applies the same skills at our studio, also from a parent’s perspective. Being the mother of 4 daughters growing up in the performance world taught her a lot from being both a paying client to operating a successful studio that supports Ashleigh and her sisters’ dreams, in a practical family orientated and affordable way for hard working families.

Jake Barker ~ Assistant Teacher

Jake is a fantastic and dedicated student who has started dancing at ALDC after being a student in Ashleigh’s grade 7 Eisteddfod Team at Robina State High School. He applied for our 2018 student teacher program to gain work experience at ALDC and get a glimpse at the operations and what’s involved to one day be a dance teacher, choreographer and studio owner. He was an outstanding all-round helper with the cash register system, assisting in classes, teaching choreography and learning how Ashleigh implements positive behaviour & communication techniques, that he was invited to join the afternoon staff team with an indefinite working scholarship. He has 3 older sisters and his mother is a teacher aide at our local Clover Hill State School, so his natural talent as a caring, kind, mature male influence really completes our teaching team and he’s a great role model to all our boys attending classes.

Jake’s aspirations are to become a professional dancer & choreographer, aiming for a cruise ship or international contract by the age of 18.

Lucy Hicks ~ Assistant, Training Teacher & Cashier

Miss Lucy was the first official student when ALDC opened in 2012 and has grown up to be an amazingly mature and nurturing assistant teacher. Her mother Nicole has decades of experience as a successful child care centre director who helped the Ackerman family open the studio via the logistic side, combining the important duty of care, regulations, child psychology, policies & procedures of a child care service with the operations of a dance school, which is ultimately what sets ALDC apart. Ashleigh studied her Cert III & Diploma in Child Services with her mother Nicole, which Lucy also absorbed and followed since the age of 8 by being Ashleigh’s little helper at kindy and the studio. This has now resulted in her position as an outstanding staff member and part of our dance family.

Lucy’s aspirations are to one day become the Director of a centre or possibly become a school principle.
